#there is no need to write another function if you can achieve this by one line of code and adding it to fields using source.

class ContactSerializer(serializers.ModelSerializer):
    category = serializers.CharField(source="category.cat_name", read_only=True)
    
    class Meta:
        model = Contact
        fields = ['first_name','last_name', 'category']
