you get this error because the json file is invalid.

You must have tried to download the json file from an existing service
account listed in "OAuth 2.0 client IDs" of the API Manager Credentials.
But the file yo get when you do that is different from the one you get when
you create the key the first time, that's the trick.

So your file most likely look something like:

From the API Manager, just create select "Create credentials" > "Service Account key" and
generate a new key for the Service that is associated to your Google Play account.
