The publication to the streaming API of a monotonically and continuously increasing sequence number, which may be either the change ID for a resource or the sequence_number for a related resource, allows the detection of missing events in the stream as these are processed. Any gap in the sequence of change (or related resource) IDs would highlight that one or more events have been missed.
